Sports car enthusiasts being a passionate lot, there are sure to be howls of protest. But there are strong arguments in favor of the R8, due in U.S. showrooms next month.

Audi mainly builds sedans. R8 is its first mid-engine, two-seat sports car. R8 starts at a hefty $109,000, meaning it would be a farce if it weren't at least a top contender for the sports-car crown.

The R8 test car, a pre-production model, proved repeatedly in 200 miles that it was a winner. You can't judge a sports car by the standards you'd use for, say, a Taurus or a minivan. But you can make some sharp distinctions when you start by asking why you'd buy a sports car in the first place, then measuring a car against the answers.
